spring is here,,spring dances by Geiko and Maiko
2018/02/26

The geiko and maiko of Kyoto, keepers of time-honored traditional dance and music, are concentrated in five kagai(geisha districts) across the city.  Each of the districts performs a large-scale dance for the public once a year, and Kamishichiken district’s Kitano Odori runs from March 25th to April 7th to usher in the spring.  Two performances are held each day, at 13:30 and 16:00, and tickets cost 4,300 yen.  For an additional 500 yen guests can enjoy a cup of green tea and a sweet before the play, which also comes with a commemorative plate.  Tickets can be purchased online for those with Japanese credit cards, procured through travel agents, or reserved with assistance at the Tourist Information Center in Kyoto Station. The Kitano Odori usually consists of three sections: a multi-scene story play, a collection of themed dances, and the ever popular Kamishichiken Serenade finale piece.  With the exception of the finale, other performances change each year.  Recent story plays have included “Enishi no Miya”, a romance ...more

茶 2018 New Year’s Exhibition Chanoyu Kettles and Related Items —Spotlighting Those Favored by the Generations of Urasenke Iemoto—  Simultaneous Exhibition: The Twelve Animals of the Chinese ZodiacSunday 7 January – Sunday 4 March, 2018Well known is the fact that Japan’s chado, or literally “way of tea,” also goes by the name chanoyu, “hot water for tea” — a name which draws our attention to just how basic and important the act of “putting the kettle on” is in order to prepare tea and to enjoy chado. To begin the year 2018, the Chado Research Center is featuring an exhibition of chanoyu kettles favored by the generations of Urasenke iemoto counting from the era of the family’s founder, Sen Rikyu, in the 16th century. Introduced, also, are many of the range of items related to the use of kettles in chanoyu, including portable braziers, frames for sunken hearths, and charcoal-handling equipment. JIDAI MATSURI October,22th sunday,2017
2017/10/16

A festival held at the Heian Jingu Shrine, the Jidai Matsuri is one of the three largest festivals of Kyoto together with the Aoi Matsuri – Hollyhock Festival (May 15th) and the Gion Matsuri (July 1st – 31st). The highlight of the festival is the Jidai Gyoretsu (Historic Pageant): a mikoshi (a portable shrine) and a suite of some 2,000 people dressed in costumes representing various eras of Kyoto’s 1,200-year history parade through the city. At noon, the procession departs from Kyoto Gosho (Kyoto Imperial Palace), and parades over a total distance of 4.6 kilometers as far as its destination, namely the Heian Jingu Shrine, arriving there around 2:30 in the afternoon. The line of the parading people stretches over a long distance and it takes more than one whole hour for the entire procession to pass one spot. This is a fine opportunity for taking a close look at the costumes, accessories and fittings which are reproduced with the ...more

Autumn full moon

Autumn full moon
2017/09/13

There is an old custom of celebrating the full moon on the fifteenth day of the eighth month on the traditional Japanese calendar. It’s a very poetic and elegant practice, with people placing ornaments and offerings next to windows, on verandas, and in other places where one can see the moon. Vases are filled with pampas grass and autumnal herbs, and seasonal foods like dumplings, pears, persimmons, and grapes are placed on dishes. Autumn consisted of the seventh, eighth, and ninth months of the year on the old Japanese calendar. The full moon in the middle autumnal month, called chushu no meigetsu, was considered particularly beautiful, as the air became crisper and the heat of summer subsided. The traditional Japanese calendar and the modern one used by countries around the world today are off by about a month. Thus chushu no meigetsu usually falls on September 12. The full moon, though, will actually appear on September 14; it’s not unusual ...more

OKURIBI

OKURIBI
2017/08/03

The Daimonji Gozan Okuribi (Daimonji Bonfire) is an event held on the evening of August 16th, when gigantic Chinese characters and other motifs are depicted by fires lit to illuminate the surroundings for patrolling on the slopes of the mountains surrounding the Kyoto Basin. It is a famous for evoking the image of a Kyoto summer. Although there are several interpretations as to the origins of this event, it is generally regarded as a fire set alight at the gate for seeing off the souls of ancestors after commemorating the welcoming of their souls. The character of “dai” (meaning “large”) on the Nyoigatake peak, and those of “myo” and “ho”which make up the word “Myo-ho” (wondrous teaching of Buddha) on Matsugasaki Nishiyama and Higashiyama mountains are famous. In addition to these three places, fires are simultaneously set to the character “dai” called near Kinkakuji temple, as well as to a ship-like funagata on the Nishigamo Funeyama, and a toriigata motif ...more

GION FESTIVAL

GION FESTIVAL
2017/07/04

The Gion Festival is an annual event dedicated to the deity of Yasaka shrine. Throughout its history,Kyoto has suffered many times from all kinds of catastrophic events including epidemics, floods, fires, and earthquakes. To keep the bad omens at bay and the good spirits strong and content, special protective or goryo-e festivals have been held here since ancient times. With its origin dating back to 869,in the early Heian period(794-1185),the Gion Festival is one Japan’s oldest goryo-e.After a series of devastating plagues, the reigning emperor desperately decreed for special prayers to be offered at Yasaka Shrine, one of Kyoto’s oldest and most important goryo-e shrines. The festival became an annual event starting around 970 and, except for brief interruptions, has continued every since.Though the event began as a religious purification ritual,by the end of the Kamakura period(1185-1333) it had also become a way for craft guilds and merchant families to compete in showing off their wealth and tastefulness.Large floats, musicians, dances, comic plays, and artistic treasures were all part of the celebrations ...more
