Setsubun is celebrated in Japan on February 3rd, marking the day before spring with various traditions meant to drive away evil spirits and bad luck and cleanse the home and family for the coming year. Shrines and temples around Japan hold special festivals for the public to come together and participate as a community, and several of these festivals are quite famous in Kyoto. Yoshida Shrine has been beloved by locals since its establishment in 859 as the guardian shrine of the capital city of Heian-kyo. The Setsubun-sai festival there, which has been held for several hundred years to pray for happiness and peace, is visited by approximately 500,000 people every year. It is held for three days, from February 2, the day before Setsubun, to February 4, the day after Setsubun. A festival held at the Heian Jingu Shrine, the Jidai Matsuri is one of the three largest festivals of Kyoto together with the Aoi Matsuri – Hollyhock Festival (May 15th) and the Gion Matsuri (July 1st – 31st). The highlight of the festival is the Jidai Gyoretsu (Historic Pageant): a mikoshi (a portable shrine) and a suite of some 2,000 people dressed in costumes representing various eras of Kyoto’s 1,200-year history parade through the city. At noon, the procession departs from Kyoto Gosho (Kyoto Imperial Palace), and parades over a total distance of 4.6 kilometers as far as its destination, namely the Heian Jingu Shrine, arriving there around 2:30 in the afternoon. The line of the parading people stretches over a long distance and it takes more than one whole hour for the entire procession to pass one spot. There is an old custom of celebrating the full moon on the fifteenth day of the eighth month on the traditional Japanese calendar. It’s a very poetic and elegant practice, with people placing ornaments and offerings next to windows, on verandas, and in other places where one can see the moon. Vases are filled with pampas grass and autumnal herbs, and seasonal foods like dumplings, pears, persimmons, and grapes are placed on dishes. Autumn consisted of the seventh, eighth, and ninth months of the year on the old Japanese calendar. The full moon in the middle autumnal month, called chushu no meigetsu, was considered particularly beautiful, as the air became crisper and the heat of summer subsided. The traditional Japanese calendar and the modern one used by countries around the world today are off by about a month. Thus chushu no meigetsu usually falls on September 12. The Daimonji Gozan Okuribi (Daimonji Bonfire) is an event held on the evening of August 16th, when gigantic Chinese characters and other motifs are depicted by fires lit to illuminate the surroundings for patrolling on the slopes of the mountains surrounding the Kyoto Basin. It is a famous for evoking the image of a Kyoto summer. Although there are several interpretations as to the origins of this event, it is generally regarded as a fire set alight at the gate for seeing off the souls of ancestors after commemorating the welcoming of their souls. The character of “dai” (meaning “large”) on the Nyoigatake peak, and those of “myo” and “ho”which make up the word “Myo-ho” (wondrous teaching of Buddha) on Matsugasaki Nishiyama and Higashiyama mountains are famous. The Gion Festival is an annual event dedicated to the deity of Yasaka shrine. Throughout its history,Kyoto has suffered many times from all kinds of catastrophic events including epidemics, floods,fires,and earthquakes.To keep the bad omens at bay and the good spirits strong and content,special protective or goryo-e festivals have been held here since ancient times. With its origin dating back to 869,in the early Heian period(794-1185),the Gion Festival is one Japan’s oldest goryo-e.After a series of devastating plagues,the reigning emperor desperately decreed for special prayers to be offered at Yasaka Shrine,one of Kyoto’s oldest and most important goryo-e shrines. さて、先日のパーティーの続きを。 2回に分ける予定が、紹介したいコンテンツが多いので3回完結にしたいと思います。   前回ご紹介した1/2階 kilnさんのフードスペースにかわり、5F Bijuu suiteは会話と生演奏とワインを楽しんで頂く大人のチルスペースにしました。   生演奏は、Nabowaのヴァイオリニスト啓さん、アコースティック・ギタリストTAIKIさん、同じくアコースティック・ギタリストの渥美幸裕さんの超豪華メンバーで。普段のレイアウトを変えて、ステージを作りました。     本当に贅沢で、素晴らしい演奏でした。生の音ってやっぱりいいですね。 みなさん、うっとり。   そして、やっぱりいい音にはいいお酒が必要不可欠。 ということで、京都の名ワインショップethelvineさんに素敵なワインバーをつくっていただきました。このSuite roomのワインセラーに常時ご用意しているのもethelvineさんセレクトのものです。 いい感じでどんどんボトルが空いていきます。     しっぽりお酒と生演奏を楽しんでいただいておりましたが、新郎新婦が登場すると一気に乾杯モードに。おおいに盛り上がりました。     Suite room 自慢の大浴槽には、テーマ：グリーンバカンスを意識してグリーンとお花を浮かべて。     ガラス壁には新郎新婦へ、みんなから愛のこもったメッセージ。喜んでいただけましたでしょうか？     そして、新郎新婦と交流のある小川裕嗣氏の花器に笹岡隆甫氏による花手前のサプライズ。     と、コンテンツが盛りだくさんな5F チルスペースでした。   最後に素敵な笑顔で。     次回はラスト！ 一日限りクラブとなった地下Bijuu Galleryの様子をご紹介します。   All photo by Yuna Yagi.

朝晩だいぶ涼しくなりました。秋の気配を感じる、京都です。 昨年の秋は、街中で新郎新婦さんがwedding photoをとっている場面によく出会いました。聞く所によると、ここ５年程和装の”京都婚”ブームだそうで。とある神社の挙式数は40倍にもなったとか。   1.5次会という言葉を聞くようになったのも最近ですね。家族だけで式をあげて、後日友人を中心に行なうパーティーで、披露宴程形式張らず、2次会程くだけすぎない新しいウェディングの形です。   さてBijuuでも先日、まさに”1.5次会”をさせて頂きました。 とっても素敵なパーティーになったので、2回にわけてご紹介します。     今回ゲストの皆さんが気楽に楽しめるよう、新郎新婦のお二人が決めたテーマは “グリーンバカンス”。ドレスコードも、とにかくリラックスということで、浴衣＆短パン＆ビーチスタイルOK!!     とっても華やかな雰囲気になりました。 そして会場は、、、なんと4フロア。ほぼビル全体！ 各フロア趣向をかえて、ゲストの皆様にお好きなように移動して頂く形にしました。   まずは1F kiln cafeさん, 2F kilnさんは、food & drink スペース。 こちらにお集りいただいて、新郎新婦の挨拶やケーキカットを行ないました。 新郎新婦の登場時には、ギターとバイオリンの生演奏を、、、大人の宴がはじまりました。     次は、ワインバー＆生演奏のチルスペースとなった5F Bijuu suite roomと、CLUBになった地下1F Bijuu Galleryの様子をご紹介します。   All photo by Yuna Yagi.

5月ももう後半。 日差しも強く、今日なんて33℃という予想、、、もう夏ですね。 暑くてバテ気味な方も多いのではないでしょうか。   そんな中、新緑とひとときの涼を楽しめるスポットを御紹介。 1週間程前に訪れた、法然院。 法然上人ゆかりの寺です。 境内は拝観自由なところも、訪れやすいポイント。 (伽藍は通常非公開。年に２回（4/1-7、11/1-7）伽藍内部が特別公開されます。)     哲学の道からほど近く、シーズン以外は比較的人が少ない静かな佇まいのお寺です。 この日も、5組ほどの人しかいませんでした。 多くの文人や学者からこの閑寂さを愛されたようで、谷崎潤一郎や河上肇などのお墓があります。     時たまふくさわやかな風に、さわさわとゆれる葉の音が心地よすぎてついつい長居。     道の途中に木の根が横断しています。 とある観光地で根元を踏まれすぎた樹齢何千年の木が弱ってしまっているというニュースを思い出し、ぴょいとまたぐ。       そして道の先には、茅葺の山門があります。 そこをくぐると、、、     白砂壇（びゃくさだん）がでてきます。     水を表す砂壇の間を通る事は、心身を清めて浄域に入ることを意味しているそう。 模様は定まっていなく、水の流れの横には桜、いちょう、楓など季節に合わせて描かれます。     この隣には講堂がありました。 法然院さんは積極的にイベントに協力されているそうで、個展や演奏会等数多く行なわれています。 この日もなにやら人影が、、、と思ったら、貸し切りイベントをされていました。   その講堂の先は自然に囲まれた庭が。 伽藍は入れなくても、この自然だけでも十分来た甲斐がありました。     静寂の中、鐘の音が響き、気づけば閉門の16時。 春や紅葉の時期はかなり人が集まるようですが、今の時期は緑を独り占めできる穴場。 ちょっと心休めたい時、境内を歩きながら思索にふけてみてはいかがでしょうか。 Bijuuからは約25分で行けます。 (河原町市バス32系統のバスで南田町で降車(約20分)、そこから山に向かって徒歩５分。)   –−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−− 本山獅子谷法然院 所在地 : 〒606-8422 京都市左京区鹿ヶ谷御所ノ段町30番地 TEL : 075-771-2420 創建 : 鎌倉時代初期 拝観料 : 無料（伽藍内特別公開の期間中、伽藍内の拝観は有料） 時間 : 6:00～16:00 Website : http://www.honen-in.jp/ –−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−   帰り際、庭師さんのトラックでしょうか、庭の手入れ道具にまぎれて荷台にのってたわんちゃん。 主人の帰りをまつ健気な表情にも癒されました。  

新緑がきれいな京都です。 最近はぐんぐんと気温があがり、気持ちのいい快晴が続いています。   さて、昨日Bijuu Galleryで催されていたKYOTOGRAPHIE の展示が終わりました。 コンゴの伊達男・サプール、大変興味深い題材でした。 アーティスト・ボードワンさんのインタビュー記事がWWDさんで紹介されています。 是非御覧になってください。   3週間は“あっっ”と言う間。 たくさんの方にご来場頂き、ビルはいつにも増して賑やかでした。 お越し頂きました皆様、KYOTOGRAPHIEの皆様本当に有り難うございました。     こういう機会があることで、Bijuu Galleryが多くの人に知って頂けるのはありがたいこと。 今後一層このスペースを活用していきたいと思います。 また今回のようにレンタルスペースとして多種多様な使い方をしていただけますので、 アーティストの方、キュレーターの方、企業の方、ご興味あれば是非お気軽にお問合せ下さいませ。   ———————————————————————————————————————————–   さて、KYOTOGRAPHIE、PARASOPHIAという大型フェスティバルが昨日終了しちょっと活気が収まりつつありますが、今週末は京都三大祭りの１つ、葵祭。 京都には年間大小あわせて300を越す祭があるのですが、古来から京都で祭といえば葵祭を指していたとも言われるくらい歴史が長い葵祭。 始まったのはなんと古墳時代後期！さすが、歴史の街・京都。 今年もたくさんの人で賑わうのではないでしょうか。   そんな長い歴史の祭の話のあとに、去年から始まった新しい宴の話を少し。 5月30,31日に太秦映画村で2回目となる太秦江戸酒場が開催されます。     こちらは、琳派400年を記念して江戸気分を味わいながらお酒や料理、さまざまな文化的催しを楽しむことができる、二夜限定のイベント。 昨年秋初めて開催された際は、限定1200枚のチケットが完売という伝説のイベントになりました。   江戸酒場の名の通りお酒やお料理を楽しめることは間違いないのですが、 個人的に思うこのイベントの大きな魅力は、敷居を高く感じてしまいがちな伝統文化に気軽に触れる事ができ、それらを継承する人たちと直接お酒を交えてフランクに話ができるところ。 文化を伝える側と聞く側の距離が近い貴重な機会、葵祭のように長く続いてほしいものです。   先ほどお聞きしたところ、チケットはまだ間に合うそう。 ご興味有る方は是非！   太秦江戸酒場　 新緑の陣 日時： 5/30（土）・5/31（日）　19:00～21:30 場所： 東映太秦映画村 〒616-8161 京都府京都市右京区太秦東蜂岡町１０ チケット： 各日5,000円（飲食別) 定員 ：各日700名様限定 購入方法： 公式ウェブサイトでオンライン決済   こちらまで

Bijuuから徒歩5分 花街・祇園では今、都をどりが開催されています。 春の風物詩として毎年4月1日から1ヶ月間、祇園歌舞練場で雅な舞を鑑賞することができます。 明治2年の東京遷都で衰退した京都の繁栄策として、明治5年、京都博覧会の余興に企画されたのが始まりだとか。 開始早々お勉強しに寄せてもらいました。   お茶席付切符を購入すると、演舞の前に芸妓さんがお点前を披露する茶席が楽しめます。 お菓子は虎屋さんの、薯蕷饅頭（じょうよまんじゅう）「春の日和」。 ここでは写真OKですが、入場したらNGです。   お茶とお菓子を楽しんだら、いざ開演。 日本舞踊に知識がなくても分かりやすい構成で、誰でも楽しむ事ができます。 今年は琳派400年を記念した演目だそうで、優美な舞を堪能いたしました。 フィナーレの総をどりは圧巻！ 京都ならではの風情を感じるひとときでした。 実はFacebookもあって、開催までの準備の様子や当日の空席案内などが紹介されています。 便利な時代になりましたね。   余韻に浸りながら帰りの木屋町で。 南座もきれいでした。

四条河原町という京都一の繁華街から徒歩1分、 木屋町通を南に50mほどに5階建てのビルがあります。 その村上重ビルの中にBijuuはあります。     丸に十の家紋が入った、のれんが目印。   1階、2階は株式会社マグナムさんが運営する、kilnのカフェとレストラン。 1F cafe / 店長のいれるコーヒーはもちろんの事、スイーツにもファン多し。 2F レストラン / 去年の春のkilnさん。窓に満開の桜！贅沢！     そして3階から上が、京つけもの・村上重本店が運営するBijuuになります。 3階は 301 deluxe roomが一室。 こちらは長期滞在・ファミリー対応のできる部屋として昨年誕生しました。連泊される方が多く、最近は3名様利用も増えてきました。 リビングスペース。客室内は足当たりのいい国産カーペットがひいてあります。     4階はオフィスです。  スタッフは4名、一応それぞれ担当の仕事はありますが、小さな宿なのでみんなオールマイティープレイヤーです。オフィスの隣はレセプションルームになっています。         5階は 501 suite roomが一室。 客室中央にバスタブと岩盤浴があるこのお部屋。Bijuuのシンボルのようなお部屋です。 ベッドスペース。ワインセラーがあります。     あと地下にはBijuu Galleryという貸スペースが有ります。 *こちらはまた後日くわしく紹介します。     こんな感じで村上重ビルは構成されています。 ざっくりとした説明でしたが、おわかりいただけましたでしょうか。     さて。今日のお花。 レストルームに、緑のアンスリューム。 つやつやしていて造花のような不思議なお花です。
